NAMM Show 2010!
Posted by Brigid on January 15, 2010, 6:02 PM

Took me long enough to post this up! Sorry guys, been too excited/jittery/swamped/jetlagged until now.

After the jump, videos and write ups on what might be the massivest NAMM show for us ever. BOOM.

So some stuff went down. We announced everything on the first day (far out!), so if you missed the announcements and want a list of the new stuff, this is it:
1. Scratch Live 2 - the new generation of Scratch Live with lots of awesome new stuff
2. The Bridge - the fruits of our partnership with Ableton (and there's more to come!)
3. The Rane Sixty-Eight - four channel club mixer with SSL built in, two USB ports, effects and SSL controls
4. Ortofon Serato S-120 - radical new cartridge from us and Ortofon, hugs the grooves of vinyl and tracks better
5. Numark V7 - turntable ITCH controller.

Alright so, let's get into it then.

Scratch Live 2 is a new version of Scratch Live that we have coming out. People went mental over this, which is always nice to see. So what's new in version 2?

Well, there's support for multiple decks within Scratch Live (using the corresponding Rane hardware), the ability to control Ableton Live and bang out mixtapes with The Bridge (we'll get into this soon), new software based effects (with this awesome expandable super knob for tweaking), great tracklist exporting feature Playlists (with a live option to stream your tracklisting as you play it), new performance modes and cool new "browse by album artwork" options for your library.

Phew, that's a lot of stuff. If you're a more visual person, check out this great demo that Aroha did that runs through all the new features:

Before anyone posts at the bottom asking when 2.0 is going to be out, all I can say is as soon as it's ready! It's in private beta right now and our awesome beta crew and dev team are working overtime to make it as stable as possible for public beta.

The Bridge

This was a big one for us. We've been working with Ableton for a long time on some inter-program communication. We went to Germany, they came to New Zealand and we met inbetween to get this stuff done. And The Bridge is the result of all our hard work. I'm not going to attempt to write it in words when Nick and Huston have done it on video already:

And this is just the beginning! It sounds cheesy when I put it like that, but there are so many things that we could do together with our software, it's hard to know which way to go. We have some great things that you guys can look forward to in terms of future Bridge development and completely new components. The Bridge is scheduled for Scratch Live 2.1.

The Rane Sixty-Eight

I went a bit gaga over this one. Of course I knew it was coming, but NAMM show was the first time I really got to jam on this thing. The Rane Sixty-Eight is a brand new four channel club mixer. It has Scratch Live built right into it (2 Scratch Live interfaces if I'm being precise) and has two USB ports. TWO USB PORTS!! Changeover will be a hassle no more! It also has built in effects, with an easy intuitive layout (and dedicated filter knob, hells yeah) and over 30 controls for Scratch Live software features, including my personal favourite the loop roll.

Here's the full run down from Rane:

This thing is a beast! One of the highlights of the show for me was when Gaslamp Killer came and visited our booth and put the 68 through its paces. I didn't get a video of the crazy noises he was making with the effects (dangit), but here's a little video I did get:

Best thing about this video is the scratch sample - Nick's version of Lil John's "yeeeaaaaah". I digress.

The Ortofon Serato S-120

We started work with Ortofon on a cartridge a while ago. It had to have superior tracking ability to work perfectly with Scratch Live, it had to be kind to vinyl and sound amazing when playing real records. To achieve this, both companies put their heads together to redesign the cantilever system inside the cartridge itself.

"What does that even mean", I hear some of you asking. Well, a better cantilever system (or 'asymmetric suspension technology') means that you get more vertical movement, which translates into the ability to handle more weight. And also, more lateral movement or the side to side movement within the groove of the vinyl itself, which translates into 50% better tracking than a standard cartridge. So in short, it is optimised for Scratch Live tracking and playing real vinyl with them is a joy: warm, loud and defined.

Here's a rad video Ortofon put together with DJ Fly:

The Numark V7

Coming off the success of the popular NS7, Numark have just announced the V7 - a new single platter digital DJ controller for Serato ITCH. Check out this video for a rundown of features:

And that, my friends, is what we've been working on. Another blog coming with pictures and more informal stuff :)
